News, specs and rumors about the Sony Xperia Z2

All right, since MWC is around the corner and I’ve been rambling on rumors about the next generation of smartphones from almost every major company it’s about time I’ve included Sony. The Sony Xperia Z2 will be the new flagship model from the Japanese manufacturer and, you’ve guessed it, will be feature at MWC this month.

Release date and price of the Sony Xperia Z2

An official release date hasn’t been announced yet, we still have to wait for Sony’s presentation at MWC but April 2014 seems to be the best bet in this case. Pricewise, the Sony Xperia Z2 is a flagship model, flagship= a hefty price tag. It’s to be expected, since the next generation of smartphones will have some new and innovative specs it’s only logical that the price should match the quality of the product, although in some cases, I won’t give any names, the price to quality ratio is highly unbalanced.

Sony Xperia Z2 smartphone specs leaked

Hooray! The specs have leaked online so you will be able to know beforehand what the phone will sport. According to these specs, the Sony Xperia Z2 will have a stunning 5.2-inch display, with 0.2 inches more that the Z1 and with these dimensions the Z2 would match the LG G2 in terms of size. The Sony Xperia Z2 is also rumored to have a 506ppi, 2K screen and the groundbreaking resolution of 256×1440. Even though the display is getting bigger the Z2 may not grow in size, rumors state that Sony has managed to reduce the bezel on the side of the screen.

The Sony Xperia Z2 will sport the same 2.3GHz quad-core processor that you can get in the Z1. This doesn’t mean that it will be underpowered, far from it actually, but it would be nice for Sony to put an octa-core chip in its flagship model. In terms of RAM, the Sony Xperia Z2 will have 3GB of it, a 1GB boost to the 2GB standard.

Sony Xperia Z2 OS

At first it seemed that the Xperia Z2 will launch with the Android v4.3 Jelly Bean but after some leaked screenshots it looks like the device will be having the 4.4 KitKat. And with this new software the Sony Xperia Z2 will come with a huge range of features designed exclusively for it. Some of these new features are: double tapping the screen to wake it up, 4K video recording, more camera modes and a selection of home screen launchers.

Sony Xperia Z2 camera and additional specs

Strangely enough, the Z2 will have the same 20.7MP camera that you can find in the Z1. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing but with the same screen and processor the Sony Xperia Z2 tends to look like an updated version of the Z1. One different thing, and a good news for phone photographers, is that Sony will replace the LED flash with a Xenon one, which provides a better light balance for more natural shots.

What else can I say about the Sony Xperia Z2? The battery is said to be improved, from the 3000mAh to 3700mAh, but with more RAM and a bigger and more demanding display the battery life seems to stay the same.

Will the Sony Xperia Z2 make a splash?

It’s hard to tell. This device really seems like an updated version of the Z1. It’s always nice to see a phone with bigger screen and more RAM but people want more. Sure screen is important but a hefty boost of the processing power wouldn’t hurt anyone. At least the Sony Xperia Z2 will have smaller bezels, finally a flagship smartphone with a big screen and a relatively small body size.
